Lewiston, NY - Festival season is kicked off in Lewiston with the annual Lewiston Smelt Festival.  This year the festival will be held on May 3, 2019 at Academy Park.  The move to Academy Park was necessary due limited event space at the waterfront.  With renovations to the park area of the waterfront, the festival tent had to be relocated to the adjacent parking lots the past three years.  The Board of Directors, after careful thought and planning, decided to move the festival to Academy Park.

The Smelt Festival is hosted by the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Village of Lewiston and Niagara River Anglers.  The Main sponsors of the Smelt Festival include Modern Corporation and DiMino's Lewiston Tops.   "We are lucky to have sponsors who understand the importance of this festival.  We are able to celebrate the Anglers and the work they do to stock our local ponds, lakes and rivers, and continue their programs for the Youth. The Chamber helps to facilitate the event, however it is the donations that come in that help keep the Anglers programs and mission to continue in this region. We are grateful for everything from the garbage cans and restrooms donated to the smelt ordered and ready to go" said Jennifer Pauly, President of the Chamber of Commerce. "This year our Event Manager Caitlin Fager, with the help of our events committee, added new components to the festival that will add to the fun".

New items include:
*New Location - Academy Park
*$5 donation parking at Academy Park (weather permitting) by the Boy Scouts Troup 855
(on - site parking entrance at Cayuga Street).
*Smelt Eating Contest!  - Registration required
*Vendors - Food and Business vendors will be on display!
*The Tim Britt Band will provide music.
*New Hashtag   #FriesWithEyes

The Festival will take place on Friday, May 3rd beginning at 5:00 p.m., at Academy Park.   Niagara River Anglers and Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce staff, board of directors and local dignitaries volunteer on Friday night along with the Smelt King, Ken Scibetta, co-owner of the Griffon House. The Anglers will batter and fry approximately 400 pounds of Smelt, given out as free samples (donations are encouraged and go towards the Niagara River Angler's community programs as well as a special fundraiser for the Town of Lewiston Police K9).   Food and beverage will be available for purchase at the event. Smelt samples are served until they run out.  The Tim Britt Band will perform throughout the event.

Many Lewiston restaurants will also offer Smelt on their menu's over the weekend.   Participating restaurants serving Smelt, and businesses offering special promotions, will be identified by a decorative fish flag outside their door.  For additional information, contact the Chamber office at 754-9500 or online at www.NiagaraRiverRegion.com
