STELLA NIAGARA, New York (August 9, 2016) - Summer is the perfect season to extend the Stella Niagara Education Park Outdoor Education Program and a summer camp is the perfect venue. Over 40 children, ages 3 through10 participated in the two-week camp held August 8 to 12 and August 15 to 19.  Camp was held on the 104-acre Stella Niagara campus.

Outdoor Education Program Coordinator, Coleen Edwards and faculty members Amanda Hibbard, Julie Perrault and Rebecca Straub served as camp counselors with the assistance of SNEP alumnae Elizabeth Manente and Morgan Perry.

The campers were divided into four groups named after New York State bird, the bluebird, State mammal, the beaver, State reptile, the snapping turtle and State fish, the brook trout.  Learning fun facts about these animals was part of the camp curriculum.

"All activities follow four themes, science, nature, arts and crafts and games," said Coleen Edwards. "We have built nature dens with sticks and twine, learned about sunflowers in the garden, made nature crowns, leaf paintings and have done an earthworm investigation. The campers made solar ovens out of pizza boxes and cooked S'mores for their afternoon snack."

Destin Radder, board certified licensed acupuncturist, shared his love of the environment by giving a presentation each week to the campers regarding animal and plant life.

The Outdoor Education Program is a ground-breaking complement to SNEP's excellent academic program. It allows children to learn, explore, experiment and become enriched by outdoor activities that integrate nature into their everyday classwork. Lessons in all aspects of the curriculum are conducted outside in all seasons.  Stella Niagara is teaching children how to lead healthy and balanced lives with a respect for their environment.

Stella Niagara Education Park is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity and is a private, co-educational, Catholic school for Montessori and Kindergarten through eighth grade.  SNEP is part of a continuing tradition of educational excellence begun in 1908 by the Sisters of St. Francis.  Stella Niagara is committed to an educational program that involves and is focused on the development of the whole child.  The school is located on Lower River Road in Lewiston, New York. For more information contact the school at (716) 754-4314.
