Sanborn Business of the Year

Niagara County Central Rotary

The Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the Niagara County Central Rotary as the recipient of the Sanborn Business of the Year Award. The Sanborn Business and Professional Association assist the chamber in providing a business nomination that has showed dedication and service to the Sanborn community. The Niagara County Central Rotary is involved in the community, from sponsoring programs to organizing events, they volunteer tirelessly to make the region a better place for all.

The beginning formation of the Niagara County Central Rotary Club started in 1986 with Dr. Donald Donato, President of Niagara County Community College, Dr. Joel Radin, Superintendent of NW Schools, as well as a Rotarian of Canandaigua, and Bob Duell who was a member of the Rotary Club of Buffalo.  They wanted to bring the civic club to the mid-Niagara County region and worked throughout the remainder of the year into 1987 to form the Niagara County Central Rotary by Rotary International on June 23, 1987.  They new club was sponsored the Niagara Falls Rotary Club and the Lockport Rotary Club who knew the importance of covering this area of the County.  On September 19, 1987 at the Niagara Club in Niagara Falls, New York the Charter of the new club was unveiled and 24 Charter Members were installed into the new Rotary Club of Niagara County Central.

The early years of the club included many fundraisers to get the club started. One of the fond memories of fundraising included parking cars for the Niagara Falls Grand Prix that used to raise on the city streets. Funds raised from volunteers parking cars for spectators over the couple day event helped the chapter to give funds to Polio Plus, a charitable organization the late eighties that the club was committed to helping.  Meetings were held in the Faculty Dining room of Niagara County Community College. Their charter year also was a big year for the Rotary International, as that year marked the inclusion of women accepted into the organization.

Meetings are now held at 7:15am, Thursday mornings at Olympia Restaurant on Niagara Falls Blvd in Wheatfield.  Meetings in most Rotary Clubs traditionally were held in the afternoon or evening.  The Niagara County Central Chapter was the first in the district to hold morning breakfast meetings.  Guest speakers are usually a part of the meetings, as well as discussion upcoming programs, and the collection of Happy Dollars!

Some of the major events that are hosted by the Rotary include: Old Sanborn Days (now in its 26th year), Cabin Fever Antique Show, Apple Tree Antique Show and Auto Part Swap.  These events serve as fundraisers for the chapter.  Additional programs include the Roger Andrews Senior Breakfast - a free breakfast for seniors held at Niagara Wheatfield HS. The Wreath Across America Program, placing wreaths on veterans' graves. In 2015, the chapter raised enough funds to pay for thirty wreaths to adorn veteran graves at Oakwood Cemetery in Niagara Falls.  Community Programs that are supported by the Rotary include Carolyn's House, WNY Heros and also Empower (formerly Niagara Cerebral Palsy).

Programs are also held for students.  The Rotary purchases and distributes over 900 dictionaries to Third Grade students in their district.  Each school in their jurisdiction, both public and parochial are a part of this program.   Scholarships are also provided to students from Wilson, Niagara Wheatfield and Starpoint school districts.  Students prepare an essay and interview.  Up to two scholarships are awarded at approximately $1000 each.  The Niagara County Central Rotary Club also sponsors the Interact Club for High School Students at NW, and the Rotaract Club at Niagara County Community College.

The Niagara County Central Rotary Club is a volunteer civic organization.  The officers include President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and a Board of Directors.  With approximately twenty two active members, the chapter is always looking for people to join them. Information on the club can be found online at www.niagara-county-central-rotary-club.org.  The Sanborn community benefits immensely from the work this organization does. The businesses are grateful for the events that help bring people in.

The Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce along with the Sanborn Business and Professional Association proudly congratulate the Niagara County Central Rotary as the 2016 Sanborn Business of the Year.
